KRATAK SADRZAJ

ABSTRACT

A data center is a large group of interconnected servers and network storage systems used by companies for the remote storage, processing, or distribution of large volumes of data, enabling and supporting various activities and services in the modern age. Data centers contain computing servers, storage devices, cooling and power supply systems, security systems, network equipment, and other computing resources, all of which result in a significant impact on the environment. The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of applying ecological principles and sustainable development in the planning and implementation of data center projects. The environmental impacts of data centers are mainly related to energy consumption and pollution resulting from the production of energy from conventional sources. In developing countries, data centers are energy-intensive and rely on non-renewable energy sources, contributing to environmental degradation and climate change. Another significant environmental impact of data centers arises from the fact that all data processing generates heat that must be removed from technical systems through cooling, thereby increasing the temperature of the surrounding environment. Additionally, an important impact is associated with the generation of electronic and other types of waste at the end of the life cycle of the equipment. To address these challenges, the concept of the “green data center” has emerged. This concept focuses on reducing energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by utilizing renewable energy sources, energy-efficient equipment, and modern technologies for power distribution, cooling, and lighting, thereby contributing to the fight against climate change.
