APSTRAKT
ABSTRACT
Forest fires are becoming more frequent and intense, representing a significant problem for ecosystems around the world, including Serbia. Bearing in mind climate changes and the growth of average annual air temperatures, the problem of forest fires is gaining more importance. This paper provides an overview of the most significant effects of fire on the chemical, physical and biological properties of the soil, depending on the intensity, duration of the fire and the type of vegetation. During high-intensity fires, there is a loss of organic carbon and nutrients, a change of pH value, the breakdown of stable soil aggregates, an increase in soil density, an increase in its hydrophobicity, which results in reduced water infiltration, increased erosion and the destruction of soil biota. The paper also presents technologies important for the prediction and detection of forest fires, with special emphasis on the potential of new technologies (e.g. smart sensor networks with artificial intelligence) for early detection in rural areas. Bearing in mind the importance of the timely application of stabilization measures, in order to reduce the loss of nutrients and erosion of burnt areas, the paper deals with some of the most effective ones, such as mulching, barrier placement, planting and conservation agriculture.
